Kathy, You Were Chosen

Leona K. West

Pregnant in the Fifties

My birth mother and father, just 18 and 19 years old, split up in the 1950s, a time when a pregnant girl's future was dictated by her parents. They told her the best thing for me was adoption. I've often wondered if we receive energy vibrations from the very start of our lives. If so, then the chaotic energy between my birth families—their broken relationship and the immense pressure—had to have shaped my own. Perhaps it's the reason I never wanted to get married or have children myself.

Birth Certificate Tells My Story

My parents told me I was "chosen," which was a comforting sentiment in light of my birth father and grandparents' rejection. I believe my birth mother's desire for me was tied to her wish to prevent a marriage annulment. Regardless, I was born, surrendered, and then placed in a hospital and foster care, where my basic needs were met, but little more. I often reflect on whether that early period of isolation is the root of my difficulty with human intimacy, a struggle that surprisingly does not extend to dogs or animals in general. I am fortunate to possess a copy of my adoption papers, which reveals my birth mother intended to name me Katherine.  My parents named me Kathy without knowing any of this.

Having this information allows me such a small window into my past, but what is here is golden.  Imagine having no clue.  I hear people say all the time, " Oh, I get that from my mother or father" Or going to the doctor and filling out the portion about medical history.  There is never a box to check for ADOPTED.   So, MGM means Maternal Grandmother.  MGF, Maternal Grandfather.  B/M is Birth Mother and so on.  My birth mother was a rebel.  I definitely relate to that.
